Twitter Files: State Department Office Funded 'Disinformation' Think Tank

TL;DR - The State Department's Global Engagement Center (GEC) allegedly provided a think-tank group called the Atlantic Council’s Digital Forensic Research Lab (DFRL) with money to falsely label ordinary US citizens as foreign political operatives.

The DFRL reportedly provided Twitter with a list of 40,000 accounts allegedly involved in "inauthentic behavior" to promote the Bharatiya Janata Party in India and Hindu nationalism. The GEC is set up to combat misinformation, but the DFRL denies using its money to track Americans. Twitter's safety chief and head of the disruption threat dismissed the lists, calling them a "total crock" and "more entertainment than anything."

The findings were distributed to several mainstream media outlets that published reports on "foreign disinformation." Journalist Matt Taibbi and author Michael Shellenberger will testify before the House Judiciary Committee on March 9.
